[Publib] How Important is ALA Accreditation?

Does anyone know what impact the closure of a library school has on the accreditation it received while the program was active?

Case in point -- my alma mater -- University of Denver -- when I graduated in August 1973 I received an M.A.. (Librarianship) from DU's Graduate School of Librarianshp.

Perhaps a decade later, the University of Denver shuttered the program. Alumni heard a fair number of explanations and the most reasonable (to me) was that
as a private university Denver relied on alumni support and the matching gifts from t the employers of graduates. Since librarians a) didn't make all that much money and b) did not tend to work for employers who matched their donations, the library school came up short vis a vis other graduate programs (business, law, hotel and restaurant management, etc.)

More recently the University of Denver has established a new library/info sciences program with the School of Education. I don't know if the new program is accredited or not but I am curious about all those jobs requiring degrees from accredited programs -- what about the Denver graduates of years ago, and the graduates of those other library schools that closed back in the 1980's and early 1990's?

Thanks for the info.
