We are in the process of adding a children's desk to our library and
improving some of our children's services. I'd like to benchmark
children's services best practices with libraries serving between
100,000 to 230,000 population.
We currently serve about 100, 000, with a build out of about 230,000
projected. We are in one building with no branch, open 71 per week; we
have two floors, with children's and circulation on the first floor and
reference and adult services on the second. We registered almost 4000
kids and teens for our summer reading program this year, and had about a
56% completion rate. We currently offer about 46 children's (birth to
elementary) programs per month, year round, except for 2 weeks in May,
August and December.
I have several questions and would love to hear from you if you are
close to this criteria.
1. What is your population served, number of hours open, and number of
buildings or branches you have?
2. How many children's staff do you have, and how many total staff in
your library?
3. How many weekly/monthly programs does your library offer and what
ages do you serve?
4. How many hours each week are staff scheduled to work the children's
desk?
5. What level of staff works the desk and do you check out at the
children's desk?
6. What types of outreach do you do (school visits, daycare outreach,
anything outside the library)?
Please reply to me directly and thank you for any input you may share!
