[Publib] Food for Fines

The Allen Public Library conducts a "Food for Fines" campaign once a
year, usually in the fall, to benefit the local food pantry. We get the
pantry's list of acceptable foodstuff and accept only nonperishable
foods, such as canned or dried foods. Our structure is one item of food
for every one dollar or portion of a dollar. Hence, a $4.50 fine would
yield 5 food items.
We run the campaign 2-3 weeks. Volunteers from the pantry come by
periodically to pick up the donations or sometimes if necessary library
staff will make a delivery to the pantry.

Hope this helps.

Could any who have done "food for fines" give me the benefit of their
experience? How do you translate food items into fine forgiveness and
any other logistical problems that you have noted. thanks
