Our library district works with the "roving librarian" model. When a
librarian is set to rove for a shift, they are provided a pager. Each
desk staffed by para-professionals has a paging device to summon the
roving librarians in the case of there being more extensive reference
questions or to call-in the librarians as supplemental staff during busy
hours. There are usually open staff desks available for the librarians
to use when they are paged to help with questions or if they find
someone in need of help as they are roving through the stacks.

I am a Youth Services Librarian in this district and love this method of
pro-active patron services. There are so many people who are too
intimidated to come to a service desk and ask a question. When you are
out in the stacks helping there is a certain ease of service that can
remove that barrier we see in more traditional models of desk reference
service.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any further
questions.
