Judy Turner writes...."Teenagers have been telling their parents they are
going to the library for about as long as there have been nearby libraries to
go to".

Some years ago while working in a large public library in another city, I
had to break the news to the father of a young woman (perhaps 16 y/o) that his
daughter was not working in the library as a volunteer, and that she was not
even registered as a volunteer, as she had told him. She did come to the
library every Saturday morning, but only to rendezvous with an older man, with
whom she would depart shortly after arriving.

Well, she was doing volunteer work, helping an older gentleman entertain
himself. Unless, that is, she was paid. I like to see that sort of spirit in
young people.

When I was sixteen, I gave my mother the excuse that I needed to go to the
library, and took the family car out for a jaunt with some friends. A lady,
fresh full of sodium pentothal from the dentist, ran a red light and I crashed
into her. Made mom's car a bit uglier than before. After that when I
wanted to use the car, I just said we were going to the beach.
