[Publib] OpenOffice

Greetings,
If you are already running MS Office applications, you
could always install OO without making it the default
for Excel, Word and PowerPoint. That way, you could
establish a knowledge base, get comfortable with the
product, then decide if you want to make it the default.
There is no cost so no harm in putting it in step
by step. In order to establish a knowledge base before
putting on public machines, it might make even more
sense to install on staff machines so they first become
comfortable with the process.
If you are expanding your network, using OO on new
machines makes more sense than spending money on
additional licenses.

We have OpenOffice on every single public computer in our entire system,
except for the Gates machine that was thrust upon us. ;) I figured since
it was free, why not. Some people use it without issue, others refuse. I
put a link on every desktop to some online tutorials. To date, I've not
had any support issues other than someone wanting to know how to save an
OOo document as a word document or vice versa.
