Greetings,

You do not need to have the cpu's under the carrels or on tables

to the side. One of the nicest products out there for libraries is

Gateway's All-in-One:

I have used this at reference desks, for staff machines, and for

standing OPACs. It is an excellent design. I was also able to

deal directly with Gateway to get a great price.

Sincerely -

Mine sit on the tables beside the monitor. The other alternative that I am
trialing in our branch library is a computer tower that is about the same
size as the Nintendo Wii - much less desk space needed, comes with built in
wifi, and there isn't that big a cost difference between it & a regular
case.

Thanks to all of you who provided feedback on my initial question.

I have a second one for you.

For my assignment I'm supposed to assume that my computers will sit
underneath the carrel in my hypothetical public library. Since they will be
under the carrel, what do you think would be the best kind of CPU
(horizontal or vertical)?

A. They should be the horizontal type of CPU.

B. They should be a vertical tower CPU.

C. It does not matter either way.

In the library where I work the computers sit flat under the carrels. On
some of the older models we've had problems with patrons bumping their knees
into the on/off buttons and turning the machines off. Newer models however
do not seem to have buttons more deeply embedded. This may seem trivial but
it does make patrons mad when they have to wait for the machines to reboot
again!

Thank you,

Alexa Goldstein

Hello Everyone!

I'm a librarian trainee/MLS candidate in New York.

I'm working on a technology purchase assignment for library school that
requires me to review three different computer models and then decide which
would best suit a public library. I'm supposed to look at technology review
sites, tech forums, listservs, etc.

The place where I'm working right now uses a combination of Dell and IBM
models so I have two of my three bases covered.

My question is this: has anyone purchased HP, Gateway, Sony, ACER, or any
other machines for their library to be used by the public?

Thank you for your input.

Best,
