[Publib] as a profession......loyalty?

Fred,
I am sorry to see such a discouraging view of administrators. Just like
there are great front staff and some not so great, there are also great
administrators and stinky ones. Often times, administrators are forced
to cut funds and they have no control over that. In many instances, the
library board directs the budgeting process. If a director is lucky,
s/he works with a board that accepts recommendations. Not all are so
lucky though.
I think the loyalty issue goes both ways. 20 years ago, people stayed at
a job for 30 years or more. That's not very common anymore. There has
been a loss of loyalty to and from both companies and employees. I work
hard to show my staff they're appreciated and I believe many others in
administration may also.
Front line staff often don't have an understanding or recognition of all
of the factors that an administrator must take into consideration. Even
if the director is the best communicator in the world, people are still
hearing through their own filters, whatever they may be.
I hope that the responses of our many colleagues on this list can help
overcome your experiences to the contrary.

Subject: [Publib] as a profession......loyalty?
Granted I am somewhat new to the profession but I read and see all the
opinions and projections regarding librarians. So many librarians are
needed and so many are expressing a work environment where they do not
feel safe or valued.
I feel that there is a true lack of motivation by administrators to
cultivate loyalty in and around employees. They want to save money and
for some it appears at a very deep cost. It seems the given attitudes
are "I will free-up your future," or "if you don't do such and such then
there is a long line of people who would love your job."
If fear tactics are what employees are being beaten with then why be a
librarian?
