[Publib] as a profession......loyalty?

It is to be hoped that every librarian eventually finds a place to settle
where they are appreciated and valued (not to mention safe), even if perhaps
not paid as much as deserved.

Boards that dictate cost savings by hiring only part-time staff sometimes
end up paying more because of constant turn-over. They may forget that
there is a cost associated with training someone new. I think Librarians
put up with a lot of, shall we say, crap, because we love the work and find
it rewarding in non-monetary ways. 14 years into my library career I am not
making what I was when I left my banking job 15 years ago. But, as I
recently told a colleague, I no longer have manager-murder in my heart and
that is worth the pay-cut. I have a FT job with benefits but I feel for
those who are piecing together two or more PT positions and still can't
afford health care.

Maybe it is time for more librarians to unionize. Anathema, I know, to
public servants, which we are.

Subject: [Publib] as a profession......loyalty?

Granted I am somewhat new to the profession but I read and see all the
opinions and projections regarding librarians. So many librarians are
needed and so many are expressing a work environment where they do not feel
safe or valued.

I feel that there is a true lack of motivation by administrators to
cultivate loyalty in and around employees. They want to save money and for
some it appears at a very deep cost. It seems the given attitudes are "I
will free-up your future," or "if you don't do such and such then there is a
long line of people who would love your job."

If fear tactics are what employees are being beaten with then why be a
librarian?
