Last month, ALA released a report
(site<http://ala.org/ala/ors/publiclibraryfundingtechnologyaccessstudy/pullibfunandtechaccstudy.htm>,
AP story<http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/nation/20070911-2101-libraries-internet.html>)
showing that the demand for computer access at most public libraries far
exceeds the supply.
When I asked two of the report's authors if security problems arising from
the lack of computers was examined in the study, they said that angle wasn't
even considered. My experience on the front lines is that this is a 'major
issue' for us. On today's (10/1) edition of LibVibe: the library newscast, I
ask library security expert Warren Graham if he's found that people waiting
around the libraries to get on a computer sometimes causes problems for us.
Listen at http://LibVibe.com/
You don't need an iPod or any special equipment, just a computer with sound
that's connected to the Internet.
Also on the eight-minute program, hear comments from the library board chair
in Bridgewater, MA, where the library has just been closed for lack of
funds.
No other library news source does this. It is a completely independent
effort that, like being a librarian, I am very proud of.
Sincerely,
Marv K.
