"The ASCLA Award for Exceptional Service, noted below, may at first glance appear to be limited to hospital libraries. The award emanated from a Forum of LSSPS, "Library Services to Impaired Elderly People," which previously was composed of primarily hospital librarians.

The Forum now consists of public librarians who serve the aging population in nursing homes and apartments for the elderly as well as through regular services within the library. The award description notes that library services to the homebound can be recognized by this award, Therefore, public libraries who are embarked on a particularly successful program serving the homebound through books by mail or direct contact would be eligible.

If you are aware of such a public library that deserves this recognition, we would appreciate your making the nomination. The form is available at www.ala.org/ascla by clicking on
Awards, on Nomination Forms in the left column, and then on "on this website" in the first paragraph. The deadline has been extended from December 15 to December 31.

Below is the description of the Award:

Exceptional Service Award is a citation presented to recognize exceptional service to patients; the homebound; medical, nursing and other professional staff in hospitals; and inmates. It also recognizes professional leadership, effective interpretation of programs, pioneering activity and significant research of experimental projects.
