Greetings, all --
I'm posting the message below on behalf of a colleague from Archives & Archivists List. Perhaps one of the sports fans on the list or a or reference librarians with access to good sports history collection can help.
Here's some of the work that's been done so far -- Dr. Taul has checked with Syracuse University Library and public libraries in the Syracuse area and is checking local newspapers from the Georgetown, Ky. area. Sporting News was not able to help and the NCAA Museum/Hall of Fame in Indianapolis has been queried (According to their web site, they had a fire over the weekend so this question might take some time to research).
In any case, the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States (IAAUS), was not established until Mar. 31, 1906. Its initial mission was to establish rules intended to reduce /eliminate the serious injuries and deaths occurring in collegiate football at that time. In 1910 the IAAUS was renamed the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The first NCAA basketball championship tournament was held in 1939 (possibly in response to the popularity of the National Invitation Tournament, or NIT, organized by New York sportwriters and held in Madison Square Garden. Up till then, basketball tournaments probably functioned like college football bowl games, with increasing controversy over which team was the national champion.
Please reply directly to Dr. Taul glen_taul at georgetowncollege.edu Happy T-Day to all and thank you for your help.

Message follows:
I am researching a story about early intercollegiate basketball. In 1905, the basketball team of Georgetown College in Kentucky was supposedly declared champions of the world. There is a possibility that a tournament was held in Syracuse, New York in January 1905. Is there a special collection on intercollegiate basketball? I would appreciate suggestions for places to look. I have not got very good results through Google or Ask.
Best wishes,
Glen Taul
