Good morning Janice --

Congratulations and Happy Anniversary.

The Bemidji Public Library celebrated 100 years of service to the
community this year.

We marked the event with a morning celebration open to the
community. Without a doubt everyone that attended had a wonderful
time. One of the things that turned out well, was the handout for the
event. It was done on 11"x17" paper and folded in half to be a 4
page, 8 1/2x11 brochure (local copy store did the copies very
inexpensive). On the inside spread we put a long timeline acorss the
17" paper, noting about a dozen milestones in our 100 year
history. At the bottom were three small pix of each of the three
buildings we've been in, the first being a Carnegie building. The
pix of that one is attached. We also had buttons made with a pix of
the original building to handout to attendees. And staff all wore
1907 clothing for the day, that we borrowed from a local theater group.

A paragraph from our handout gives a brief history of the Carnegie building:
" In 1905, the city's first charter was adopted and contained a
provision to acquire a free public library and to appoint a library
board. The city of Bemidji founded the Bemidji Public Library on
February 4, 1907. By 1909, the combined efforts of the city, the
Woman's Study Club and the library board secured a $15,000 grant from
the Andrew Carnegie Foundation. A site was chosen overlooking Lake
Bemidji, and a Classic Revival style building was completed. The
building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980."

I will put a copy of the handout and a button in snailmail for you. I
can send you an attachment of the Publisher file for the handout if
that helps. Feel welcome to call or keep the conversation alive on
email. We are especially proud of the combined effort of Library
staff, Library Board, Friends of the Library, local perfomers and
elected officials that planned and participated in the event.

Paul
