The Penguin Guide to Compact Discs and DVDs is a really good guide for the best classical recordings.  The problem is that B&T and other vendors may not have them in stock because the recordings recommended as the best performance of classical works are not often the most current recordings.  (I could go on and on about classical, but.....)
 
To keep up with what's hot in genres you are not familiar with, try billboard.com for top sellers and new releases in every genre.  Only a few lists are restricted to subscribers.  People Magazine reviews CDs every week and if it shows up there, you know it's popular.  (Incidentally, the B&T CD Hotlist is months behind, especially when it comes to rock and pop.)
 
Amazon.com has a section called New and Future Releases, which will let you know which big recording artists have new records coming up.
