We've had similar programs over the years, but we like to surprise people &
never have amnesty periods at the same time, like during NLW. That way
people won't "hold" their overdue items until the fine-free period. (We've
had people call to ask when our next fine-free period was going to be!)
We had a "food for fines" program a couple of times---once during the
holidays, and it worked out well. Then our local Salvation Army said they
always received lots of donations during the holidays, but by summer their
stash was getting really low. So that year we decided to have a "Christmas
in July" amnesty period where people could not only return long overdue
items without having to pay a fine, but they could also "pay" old fines with
canned goods for the Salvation Army. It was great. We had many lost items
returned and collected well over 600 cans of food---plus, you should have
seen the looks on people's faces when they walked into the library and saw
the Christmas tree!!
