Here is a link to an article in School Library Journal about the first
public library in the US to dump Dewey:

I helped a patron who was originally from England and asked for the
"cookery" books.

Subject: [Publib] re: alternative to Dewey

Last week I posted a letter asking for feedback from any libraries that are
using or

contemplating changing from Dewey to BISAC, the Book Industry

Standards and Communications system of classification. I received many
emails from other libraries who were interested in this, but unfortunately,
I didn't get any responses from libraries that are using it now. I am
therefore assuming that while libraries are looking at it, they are
cautious. Further research into the BISAC system, shows that while they use
different categories, they're system requires changing spine labels... as
well as relearning the new categories. I think that for our library, we
will continue to create and use commonsense subjects i.e. cooking -I've
never once in 20 years of library work had anyone ask for the cookery books.
