Veterans' Day is the 11th of November. When you hear the politicians making
their speeches about sacrifice and gratitude, keep the following in
mind--and also think about what this means for your library, in terms of what to
expect and what to provide in the way of services:
The National Alliance to End Homelessness will release a report tomorrow
whose information and conclusions are sobering indeed. According to the report,
Veterans make up one in four homeless people in the United States, though
they are only 11 percent of the general adult population.
Advocates say the early presence of veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan at
shelters does not bode well for the future. It took roughly a decade for the
lives of Vietnam veterans to unravel to the point that they started showing up
among the homeless. Analysts in the field believe that the that intense,
repeated deployments have left newer veterans particularly vulnerable.
