(If you don't know about it, Wikipedia will tell you.) Ever since third grade (1960), when I had an exchange teacher from England, Guy Fawkes Day has been burned into my otherwise increasingly memory-less brain.
To show how times have changed--as if you didn't know--my mother, who was very proper and honored authority and tradition as received in her lifetime, but who also was the owner of an advanced degree in English history ("British Empire," as it was quaintly called when she acquired the M.A. in 1946), actually invited Miss Jardine to *our house* for dinner. A god, or demi-god, in our very house! (For such were teachers in those days.) Miss Jardine--I also remember--did not eat her salad *and* she smoked cigarettes. Of course, millions of people smoked cigarettes, including my parents, in those days, but still...a teacher, smoking, in our house. Mystifying and/or vaguely disturbing, if not positively scandalous.
Now it would be scandalous because of life since the Surgeon General's report in the somewhat later 1960s.
Ah...sweet memory of youth!
Happy Monday, along with Guy Fawkes.
