[Publib] Self Check out promotion

Unless I had a question or an item on the reserve shelf, I'd use self- checkout if my library offered it, especially if there's a line at the circulation desk. I know I would use one if I was downtown at Central Library where people always seem to be waiting in line, often with stacks of videos that have already been checked out in the AV Dept but have to be rechecked before they can be removed from the building. Given that Central requires a photo i.d. in addition to a library card, I doubt they will implement self check-out any time soon ;-(

Home Depot is the only store in this area that offers self-checkout and I've been using their machines for more than a year now and I like them. The first time or two was a bit awkward because the directions weren't all that easy to follow but they station an employee to help customers at all four machines in the self-checkout area. Since getting the hang of the procedure, it's a real pleasure to be able to bypass the lines of contractors and builders with their carts of lumber, dry wall, boxes of shingles and special discounts, etc.

I do not feel that I am denying people meaningful employment by using self- checkout. Operating a scanner and cash register is one of the least desirable jobs in the retail environment. The toll this type of job takes on workers' hands, wrists, elbows, backs, knees and feet is significant as well. Having to put up with rudeness and customer complaints doesn't make the work any more pleasant.
