In August one of my patrons saw the PBS production, Cities of Light: The
Rise and Fall of Islamic Spain (Description from PBS: This film takes
viewers on an epic journey back into one of the most captivating and
important periods of world history, a centuries-long period when
Muslims, Christians and Jews inhabited the same far corner of Western
Europe and thrived. Here were the very roots of the European
Renaissance. But the fragile union dissipated, destroyed by greed, fear
and intolerance.). She suggested this movie could form the basis of an
interesting program for our Conversations in the Community group and our
Let's Talk About It: Jewish Literature group. I ordered the tape from
PBS.
When I found it was backordered and would not be here in time for our
program, I contacted the Production Company only to find out they were
encouraging dialogue about the film and would provide a copy,
facilitator guides, and invite templates for free!
I discovered 20,000 Dialogues is an exciting new initiative of Unity
Productions Foundation. By using the medium of film to promote
interfaith/diversity dialogue at the grassroots level, UPF is offering a
free film of either Cities of Light: The Rise and Fall of Islamic Spain
or Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet to peacemakers eager to start a
dialogue in their community.
UPF's first film, Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet has been distributed to
over 10,000 libraries across the country and 20,000 Dialogues seeks to
add a structured dialogue and educational component that can be
facilitated by experts and non-experts alike.
Learn more about this initiative here: www.dialoguesforpeace.org
Here is how you can host your own dialogue:
* Pick a date (or several dates) to hold a screening and dialogue.
* Go to the 20,000 Dialogues site and register
<http://20000dialogues.org/register.aspx> .
* In 7-10 days you will receive your copy of either Cities of
Light: The Rise and Fall of Islamic Spain, or Muhammad: Legacy of a
Prophet, completely free of charge.
* Invite your patrons and colleagues to join you.
* Before you host your dialogue print out and review the free
dialogue packet <http://20000dialogues.org/dialoguepackets.aspx> , rich
with resources for first time facilitators.
* Complete an online evaluation of your dialogue.
Our program was very successful and several have asked to borrow the
tape to continue the dialogue in other settings.
