IMNSHO, the words "bureaucrat" and "politician" have become perjoratives. The practitioners of both professions are, for the most part, hard-working people who are dedicated to their jobs. Not all elected officials command huge salaries and enormous perks. For many, serving in public office may be somewhat of a hardship, as the pay for part-time officials is not always reflective of the work involved.

Many years ago, I served on the AFL-CIO/RASD [then} Joint Committee on Library Service to Labor Groups. We tried to plan a program for a conference, and after reviewing the hoops we needed to jump through, one of the union representatives said: "ALA has a bigger bureaucracy than the AFL-CIO!"

As for costumes, my library supervisor - who was absent yesterday to take her husband for some medical tests - said the receptionist told her one of the nurses was dressed as a whoopee cushion.
