For Los Angeles, you need something that gets around fast and can use the  
car-fool lane.  I get fifty plus miles per gallon on my Kawasaki  Concours, it 
has two very large suitcase-like hard bags, the HOV lane is all  mine and I can 
outrace anything else out there that doesn't have wings.   Parking is 
generally free, even where it costs others money, and I can always  find a space.  
Nice comfortable machine, wind protection, the whole  package.  I keep an old 
pickup truck at home for weekend trips to the  hardware store.
