Hello Scout B,
Pardon me for the confusion. We included those statements of why and how we
choose graphic novels in anticipation of complaints against them. We started
with Juvenile and YA collections and anticipate purchasing adult graphics
after the new fiscal year. As of now, we have not received serious complaint
against them. However, in the past three weeks we have received several
formal complaints against the library for us agreeing to host a Magic: the
Gathering game on June 23 for teens ages 13-19. These complaints confirm our
urge to be proactive in the graphic novel area. The complaints appear to
have been started by one church and word has spread. One woman came in to
talk to our director and informed her that there are "28 Baptist churches"
in our county.
As for the Magic game, our library board has agreed to a special meeting on
June 5 to hear complaints or support for the Magic game and listen to
suggestions about what kind of teen programming should be conducted at the
library. The board will make a decision after that about whether or not we
should hold the game on June 23. This game was requested by a high school
freshman who filled out a comment card and put it in our suggestion box. He
is coming to the June 5 meeting in support of the game. Our library already
hosts a monthly Xbox LAN party where people age 15-25 play Halo 2 and Gears
of War.
