It does help, thanks. The statement addresses potential concerns and is
thorough. Nice.
Am I correct in understanding, then, that you have already received a
complaint about a graphic novel (or graphic novels in general)?
I'm also interested in the decision to build a significant collection of
this type of material: is that in response to the level of patron interest?

Hello Moira and anyone else,
Below in "" is the graphic novel policy I draft for my library. We did draft
a policy mentioning graphics because we are nervous that someone will
complain about them. We thought to be proactive by having a policy to
address any future complaints. I specifically included a comment on graphic
novels because we are building a significant collection and are in a very
conservative, rural location. Therefore, I included a comment about how
graphic novels are a very popular and critically acclaimed literary medium.
We are nervous because several graphics we have seen include excessive
language and a little nudity in the images. We are afraid that will attract
the wrong kind of attention, specifically from the "28 Baptist churches" in
our county, as one of the complainants told us. Currently, we are facing
serious complaints to our library board against hosting a Magic: The
Gathering game for teens in June.
I hope this helps.

"The Grant County Public Library develops a graphic novel collection of core
and popular titles that serve the informational and recreational interests
of children, young adults, and adults. Graphic novels have gained literary
acceptance as a new medium through which a combination of text and
sequential art are used to tell a story. The library collects graphic novels
in English. Library customers should be aware that graphic novels
translated from other languages may reflect cultural differences. The
library strives to choose graphic novels that serve a wide age range of
audiences, but it is the responsibility of parents or adult caregivers to
determine which materials are appropriate for their children.
Graphic novels are chosen from professional reviews in publications such as
Library Journal, School Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, and Booklist;
recognized online sources; award lists; and bibliographies. Customer
requests are also considered when choosing titles for the collection."
