Greetings,
There is another layer to all of these posts that
has not been discussed.
Many of the people who read this list are subject to
use policies by their parent organizations. When you send
a message to a list that they subscribe to, the e-mail
and links are monitored by their parent organization's
filtering service. The parent organization analyzes the
content of the message to determine if the links are
'productive'.
For example, my little youtube link below triggers
an e-mail warning from big bubba to let them know that
following the link may be a violation of policy and
productivity.
For them, publib may be the only link to an intelligent
world beyond the script generated by a person with
a bachelors degree who got to determine who reads
what. Although we have looked at and dealt with
freedom of speech for the public, the fact is many
librarians do not have that luxury.
When I read those postings, in my mind they are
a projection of big bubba's influence on individual
librarians pushing local policies out to the rest
of us. If the posts are labeled in such a way that
the can be bypassed and not constitute a breach of the
parent organizations rules, then the affected readers
can use the list without fear of reprisals.
