Art @your library®
The Carnegie-Stout Public Library, Dubuque, Iowa will host the exhibit The Gospel of Wealth: Andrew Carnegie Interpreted Through Sculpture June 1 * June 29, 2007. The exhibition, by artist John Anderson-Bricker will be composed of seven sculptures that reflect on different aspects of Andrew Carnegies life. Each sculpture will be welded steel except for an installation sculpture, Continuous Flow, which will be composed of two thousand objects suspended to form a three-dimensional representation of a steel furnace. The modular sculpture The Gospel of Wealth is composed of four cubist/ionic pillars representing the many conflicting ideas within Carnegie as a great steel industrialist of the Gilded Age and the philosophical ideals espoused in his famous document the Gospel of Wealth.
The four pillars entitled Philanthropy, Robber Barons, Carnegie and Homestead will highlight specific Carnegie contributions to society; philosophical ideas and actions to accumulate enormous wealth; the biographic professional ascension of Andrew Carnegie the Industrialist; and finally the labor movements and union breaking exemplified in the Homestead Lockout.
The last two individual sculptures Rolled Steel Scraper and Cost Accounting highlight the contribution of rolled structural steel to the modern American urban landscape and the intense cost assessment management practices that affected working conditions for all employees across the hierarchal spectrum.
The artists intention of the sculpture exhibition is to bring patrons into direct contact with his interpretation of Andrew Carnegies life and an attempt to understand him in his own culture and time while exposing them to the transformation of American society resulting from the industrial revolution and similar themes that we all encounter today.
The artists goals not only meet the Librarys goals of Art @ yourlibrary® but are an ideal representation of its mission. As Andrew Carnegie viewed a free public library as an instrumental tool for individuals to pick one self up by their boot straps, Anderson-Bricker believes in utilizing all accessible institutions of knowledge as a life long learner and contributor to society. Whether visitors share similar experiences with the artist or Carnegie, an exhibition of this kind is the beginning of a dialogue. How do we judge success? What are appropriate measures for amassing wealth? Why should we contribute back to society?
A reception will be held on Friday, June 1 from 5:30 * 7:30 p.m. in the Librarys historic Rotunda area, 360 W. 11th Street, Dubuque, IA. Refreshments will be provided. This project is supported, in part, by the Iowa Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
