Hi Deborah,
We accept all types of binding for donations. If it doesn't appear
strong enough for the collection, we add it to our sale rack. We do
charge patrons for damaged/lost items, whether they were donated or not.
We do not mark items as donated when we add them to our catalog so we
wouldn't necessarily know that they were when they were lost. Either
way, if it's a popular item we're still going to have to pay to replace
it.

I have a two-part question that I hope this helpful list can assist me
with:
 
First, as a rule of thumb, what type of book bindings do other libraries
accept as donations and add to their collections?  Do you only accept
library binding and/or those reinforced with book binding cloth?  Or
will you accept books with glued bindings (such as the bindings on many
book club books) and add them to your collection?
 
Second, for any type of donated material you add to your collection, do
you later charge patrons if they should damaged or lose it?  Or do you
not charge the patron because the library didn't pay for it?  This
question/debate keeps coming up at my library.  I thought what better
place to turn than PUBLIB.
 
Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated.
