Just like real estate, the prime issue is location, location, location.  But 
more than that, the reference desk should be designed to be approachable.  
If it's big and boxy and reminisent of a judges bench, it will be 
off-putting to a good number of people.  Try to use soft lines, build in 
approachability from every traffic direction and make it of reasonable 
height. Unfortunately, I have no pictures of good examples, although I have 
seen several.
