My mother's Uncle Arthur lived in Yonkers, we always thought of that as
"upstate".   (beyond THE CITY limits.)

Thinking back to my youth on Long Island, my recollection is my grade school
peers and I felt Upstate stated just outside of Freedomland Park

Later in High School the boundary between up and down moved to just outside
of Palisades Park (which is in New Jersey, another universe altogether)

Of course as we got older and acquired drivers licenses the line moved to
somewhere around New Paltz.

say that a large part of the state views Upstate New York as starting at the
southern border of Yonkers. As a graduate of the SUNY system, awash in
downstaters, I would reply that Upstate starts at the northern borders of
Orange and Putnam Counties. 



The various other regions, Central New York, Western New York, the North
Country, etc., still apply.
