Thinking back to my youth on Long Island, my recollection is my grade
school peers and I felt Upstate stated just outside of Freedomland
Park http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedomland_U.S.A.

Later in High School the boundary between up and down moved to just
outside of Palisades Park (which is in New Jersey, another universe
altogether) http://www.palisadespark.com/index.htm

Of course as we got older and acquired drivers licenses the line
moved to somewhere around New Paltz.
