Our Gates trainer explained it best It was my understanding if a patron is
able to use the terminal for web searches, email and others things other
then just OPAC it can be replaced. It is public access driven.

I have a question for the group about the Gates money we received for
computer replacement. We need to purchase replacements for our "dumb"
terminals which are very old. Does anyone know if the Gates grant prohibits
spending on "dumb" terminals for OPACS? TIA!

Well, I have two suggestions. You could get a free copy of QuickBooks Simple
Start from downloads.com. You still have to call them and register it, and
it only allows, I think, 20 "customers," but you could make it work.
Instead of "customers," you could use those 20 options to set up types of
charges, i.e., "lost," "missing," "irreparably damaged," etc. Then you just
fill in the individual's name on the invoice each time. It would certainly
allow you to track. But it may seem simple to me because I use it. I know
that some people have had problems with using QuickBooks in the past.
The other options is the "Help" feature in Microsoft Excel. Do a search for
"invoice" and it will provide a number of options. They are preprogrammed
with a number of predesigned fields and are usually already complete with
formulas for calculating labor and/or tax or whatever you need. If you have
internet access, it may ask you if you want to look at the Microsoft
website, which does provide even more options. Excel is much more simple
than QuickBooks in terms of downloading and making changes to the invoice
form, but it will not allow you to track as much information and stats as
QuickBooks might. Excel may also have the benefit for you in that you
wouldn't need to spend the admittedly overly long hour or so it takes to
download, install, and register QuickBooks. In terms of organization, with
QuickBooks, all your information will be in one place. With Excel, you will
likely be saving them to a single folder, but the organization you could get
with QuickBooks is not really possible.
It's up to you and how much time, energy, and experience you have with
either of these programs. I've used both, and both are free (except for
your time).
I hope this helps,
