REINVENTED REFERENCE 3: EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES FOR REFERENCE SERVICES
RUSA MARS/RSS Preconference
FRIDAY, JUNE 22, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Event Code: RU2
How can social networking, blogging, and podcasting be applied to
reference and
information services? How can you best use instant messaging and other
available technologies to provide Everywhere Reference? Speakers from
academic
and public libraries will highlight selection, implementation and
evaluation of
new technologies for cutting edge reference services. Network with
colleagues
regarding successful new service models!
Keynote speaker Michael Stephens (Graduate School of Library and
Information
Science at Dominican University), author of the Tame the Web blog, will
address
"Web 2.0 Technologies for Reference Services." David Ward (University
of
Illinois - Champaign Urbana) will discuss instant messaging and chat
services
for reference and what the future holds in his talk "IM and Beyond."
The
afternoon session features David Free (George Perimeter College) and
David King
(Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library) talking about podcasting and
videocasting for reference services. Using blogs for reference services,
marketing, and outreach will be presented by Karen Coombs (University of
Houston). To conclude the day, Michael Stephens will provide a
summary and
reflection of the day, and lead the panel in a discussion.
