As to McClay, I would have a dozen more like him if I could. If he is
as wrong as we think, then we have the obligation to prove that to him
and to the constituency he claims to represent. May our galleries be
filled with our opponents, and for that matter, with voices on every
side. And one other thing: If Mr. McClay is elected to Council, we
will have the opportunity to debate him, and he us. That would
certainly go a long way toward dispelling the image of Council as a
rubber stamp for liberal issues.

The real "culture wars" of recent years isn't between "liberal versus
conservative" or "blue versus red". It is between those who believe
what they see and those who see only what they believe. I would like to
think that the library profession and those of us on Council are
decidedly in the former category. In other words, we are able to be
convinced by logical, sensible arguments and aren't self-identified
warriors for either ideological persuasion.

I respectfully disagree with the premise that the ALA Council has ever
been a "rubber stamp" for "liberal" issues - or should take special
pains to prove that we are, indeed, "fair and balanced". Some persons -
such as Mr. Kent and Mr. McClay - may wish to "paint us" as left
dominated, but it is neither accurate nor constructive. Members of
Council aren't easily categorized into "teams" or "parties". It is the
nature of our Council, and of the profession itself, to assess arguments
on their merits and based upon the information presented rather simply
bouncing back with sound bite arguments in a "point vs. counterpoint"
contest.
