The following two books (considered among "best business books of the
year") are easy to read, very practical, but grounded on sound research.

While there is a lot of debate over what leadership is about, Samuel
Bacharach, who has been on the Cornell faculty for over 30 years and is the
McKelvey-Grant Professor in the department of organizational behavior, has
written two volumes on leadership which hit the nail on the
head. According to him, if your organization is going to succeed, if
you're going to succeed, you'll need two leadership capacities. First, you
need to be politically competent. You need to know how to rally people and
establish coalitions around your ideas. You need to get them on your
side. Second, you need to be managerially competent in order to sustain
momentum. You have to keep people on your side and go the distance.

His books, Get Them on Your Side: Win Support, Convert Skeptics, and Get
Results (Adams Media, 2005) and Keep Them on Your Side: Leading and
Managing for Momentum (Adams Media, 2006) while based on years of academic
research, are written for the practitioner and have received wide
acknowledgment. In 2006 Canada's leading newspaper, the Globe and Mail
maintained that Keep Them on Your Side was one of the best business books
of the year. In 2005 Fast Company declared Get Them on your Side to be one
of the best books of the year. These volumes present leadership as a
series of learnable, doable tasks. Bacharach firmly shows how leadership
can be learned and implemented at all levels of the organization, even by
those who are not charismatic.
