Hi all, I was asked to pass on this note from the guy who made the
"dewey" remark on Jeopardy. This is a little late, but I just received
it today. Cheers,

Polly

Dear Publib posters,

I am that guy from Jeopardy and I felt compelled to write to you in

defense of my poorly phrased comments. Yours were the only two email
addresses I could glean from the site, so if you would consider passing
this
message along to the other posters, it would certainly ease my mind.
I've
watched those episodes quite a lot at various gatherings and in my own
time,
and I have certainly caught a lot of flack from my friends in the
program
for saying what I said. I did not mean that Dewey had outlived its
usefulness, nor do I feel that it should be phased out. The first thing
I
learned in the very first library I spent any kind of time in was Dewey.
I
think it's a very important thing to learn for any student in library
school, and I am currently plowing through a cataloging class as I write

this.

Anyhow, everything moves VERY fast while you're standing on the Jeopardy
set
and you really have no idea what Alex is going to say to you while
you're
standing there waiting your turn. There's really no way around what I
said,
but what I was thinking was that LOC was the method I had encountered in

academic libraries and that was where I wanted to be a librarian. But
when
I opened my mouth to say that, the words that came out were not the ones
I
had intended. While I know this doesn't change the fact that I looked
like
an idiot, especially when I was introduced as a student in Library
Science,
I hope it helps you all to understand what was happening with me while I
was
up there. Thanks for taking the time to give this a read.

Kindest regards,

Wayne Cherry
