Find a book alert:

Patron is looking for a book about a missionary who gets sent to another
planet, stays there for a time, and before he comes back to Earth, his
hands are cut between the fingers practically down to his wrists. 
They mystery is why the cutting.  Main character, if recalled correctly,
has an Hispanic name.  Book has a sequel.

Does this ring a bell with anyone?
