This reminds me of the old tradition of silence among bartenders. No
barkeep on earth will ever tell a woman on the phone that her husband is there, no
matter what. They take a number and say, "If he comes by, I'll give him the
message." For that matter, bartenders are known to be completely blind and
deaf in courts of law, especially as regards divorce proceedings. A guy could
come in there with a different woman every night, but the gaffer would tell
an attorney nothing. The tavern is as safe a sanctuary as the medieval
church. Is there an equivalent for women? Perhaps the hair salon?
For that matter, a gentleman always knows that once the bottle is opened,
that nothing said or done after that goes beyond the edge of the table.
