[Publib] Furnishing Costs & Staffing

My city is continuing to think about expanding our library. I am to bring furnishing cost and operating cost estimates to a meeting this Wednesday.

Currently the library is approximately 1,400 sq feet. It is located in a tourist town so it is extremely busy in the summer. The library is staffed by one paid full-time employee (me, a non-MLS, former RN). I have two volunteers who put in a total of 20 hours per week. The library is a branch of a two county district library, so I do not have to do any purchasing or processing of materials, or the ILL paperwork.

I have looked at the archives and other sources and found furnishing cost estimates that vary from $20 to $35 to $125 per sq foot. Does anyone (especially in the Midwest) have any recent estimates they could share?

The city has decided that a new library should be 7,500 sq feet in size. I would like to know the number of full-time and part-time staff that similar sized libraries have. (I realize that some of these staff people will be spending time on purchasing, processing, etc., unless they are also located in a branch library.)

I know that these and many other questions could be answered by a library architect &/or space planner, but that is not an available option.

  Thank you,

  Luann
