Perhaps worry should be attached to a certain quality of message, rather than any and all messages? There are a lot of messages about alcohol on TV, in the movies, and at sporting events. These may not be fit for little Newberry-readers, but it doesn't follow that the subject itself should be off-limits. For example, if you are writing a book about a little girl aping the 12-step program and invoking her "higher power" to solve her particular conflict, you might need to kick start her approximation with someone cartoonishly "hitting rock bottom". I don't think the passage glorifies drinking half a gallon of rum, getting snakebit, or listening to Johnny Cash.

I find it interesting that there's so much fuss about the use of the word
"scrotum" while not much discussion of the fact that the first part of the
sentence says "Sammy told of the day when he had drunk half a gallon of
rum...."
   I guess we're not worried about children getting messages about alcohol.
