[Publib] DDC and fiction and other stuff

In the dark ages when I went to library school, there was talk of
shelving all forms of media in one shelfing arrangement. Books, media,
whatever all filed together by the DDC. We tried to do that at one
small library in Kansas during the 1980's. It seemed to help keep
things on the same subject together. I don't know how long the
experiment lasted.

We at Grapevine Public have the sound casette books and CD books all in
the DDC classification. All fiction (which is the huge part of the
collection in those media types) falls into the 800's. People don't
seem to mind except they need to know whether Danielle Steel is American
or British to find her books.

Were it me, I would add the books on media etc to the books and shelf
them all in the appropriate DDC. Yea, though, I am but an humble
reference librarian and so I work with what they give me.
