Greetings -
I do not know what steps are being taken by your
Director, but I recommend investigating methods
of raising funds to continue the service.
Most Libraries qualify for tax cutting donations.
Raising $500 would continue the service and fall
under the mandate of saving money.
For a technological solution to gain printing
efficiency, I suggest sending you info to Web4Lib.
But, I would also recommend that you
give more specific data regarding your system
to give them something that can be used to come
up with a solution that matches your needs.
Sincerely -

Subject: [Publib] Public printing
The county is getting ready to hack the budget, and our director is asking
the librarians to come up with ways to save money.
At this time we have a pretty liberal printing policy for the public
computers- 20 free pages, and we accept a 10 cents per page donation over
that.
A toner cartridge for the printer in our lab runs about $207, and we go
through about one per month. If we could get an extra 6 days out of each, we
would use about 10, at a savings of about $415 per year(rough calculation,
of course). That doesn't include the cost of paper, wear and tear on the
machines, and ill will when the printer goes down.
A part of our problem is that there is A LOT of waste- literally stacks of
printing that ends up in the recycle bins. I am sure some of it is the
result of patrons printing before they decide if they really want to take it
home with them. With the liberal policy, there is little motivation to be
conservative.
Any one have any success solving this problem, short of print management
hardware? Thanks
