Emory University, University of Maine, Toronto Public Library and
Cincinnati Public Library are collaborating with Kirtas Technologies and
BookSurge, a Print-on-Demand company, to digitize and, in the future
sell POD copies of public domain works on Amazon.

A very interesting article simply because the name "Google" does not
appear anywhere in the article. The libraries will get to keep the
output to use as they see fit and the project creates a residual income
stream which, I believe, could be used to pay for the copyright
permissions (http://www.copyright.com/ccc/viewPage.do?pageCode=ac12 or
something similar) to allow for the digitization and use of non-public
domain titles by authorized users.

If this works out, things will definitely be looking up for libraries.
