I agree that the library as perfectly quiet place is a myth, but that lack of quiet is a direct result of the library being a library. People come in, they bring their children, they don't leave their lives behind (ie. their cell phones), they talk about projects and business deals. Purposely introducing sound or noise is a whole other beast and probably not a pleasant one that will turn into a prince at the end of the day. Patrons may be able to accept the collateral noise of a busy place, but deliberate sound seems almost disrespectful...and it undercuts the library's credability to try to instill any policies of noise control that are controllable by the patron.

My thoughts, of course.
