I detest music in stores, restaurants, elevators, etc. It's almost impossible to carry on a conversation with another person, let alone think. I do most of my shopping online to avoid shopping, in part, because the music is so intrusive.
However, I do not think libraries must be quiet places. I welcome the noise of customers. Libraries should be lively, full of people sharing ideas, conversing about favorite reads, using the meeting rooms, etc.
As for the worst pop music, I vote for anything by The Carpenters (remember "We've only just begun), Barry Manilow, Anne Murray, George Michael, Neil Diamond, the Bee Gees.
