Greetings,

At the Rhode Island Library Association annual meeting this week, I had the
pleasure to attend a

session on Fund Raising and Development by Kitty Pope, Director of the
Alliance Library system

in Peoria, IL. She did a great job.

One of the statistics that Ms. Pope noted was that there are more Libraries
than there are McDonalds

restaurants in the US. So, collectively we not only represent massive
information resources, but we also

represent many, many physical structures. Those of us who have had fiscal
responsibility for

libraries know that there is always pressure to save money. And, utility
bills are one of those costs

that go up and up.

I think we should start a conversation on how libraries can collectively
participate in green projects to

not only educate the public, but to help the environment by finding funding
that can lead to

better building practices and alternatives in design.

A great presentation on environmental responsibility by entrepreneur John
Doerr who spoke

at TED is embedded in my web site here:

Mr. Doerr raises very important points and concerns.

If you are interested in starting a dialog about best practices and funding
potential to make

libraries greener, please let me know.

Sincerely -
