Wendy-
If you want to be a good public librarian, you need tolerance and a
sense of humor. You need to listen to the question asked for the
question that isn't asked. You need to care as much about the
information needs of a snotty (literally and figuratively) kid as you do
about the college student or the adult with a medical question. You
need to respect people's differences, from you as well as from each
other. If you want to be a great public librarian, you need time on the
front lines to practice your craft. I can't tell you the skills you
need for academic librarianship, or archival work, or the many special
librarian types of work. You'll have to poll those lists.
...and that's MY opinion
