What area/aspect of the profession? Public service? tech services?
computer science?
Years ago I was asked by a library science student, on assignment, what I
thought the single most important quality of a reference librarian was? I
didn't know I thought it until it popped out of my mouth: "to listen."
The best librarians, over my 30+ years, have been people who:
--have a sense of humor
--like most people most of the time
--are flexible (know when a rule/policy/procedure has to be bent, for best
service)
--are immensely curious ..keep learning
--are courageous enough to experiment
--are unselfish enough to value being part of a great team, rather than a
solo star
--are self-monitoring, know when burn-out threatens and deal with that.
--are proud of public service.
