[Publib] a question from a new LIS student

Actually I sort of disagree with this. Posting a question to this list is pretty passive compared to actually going out and TALKING to librarians and library administrators to find out what they really think. I would be much more impressed with a library school student who called me up, made an appointment, came in and talked to me for 15 minutes about the profession and asked me what I thought. Especially if they are interested in working with the PUBLIC. Please, no more wallflowers, shrinking violets, or library school students who think the world can be saved by putting everything on the web. I love the Internet, use it daily, keep up to date, etc. etc. But our profession is about people and serving people and making life better or easier or more fun for people. Anyone who wants to be a good librarian should be willing to go outside the library's walls from time to time and actually TALK to people. Anyone who wants to be a great librarian should be willing to make mistakes, take risks, get involved in the community and realize that the library isn't the "end all and be all" of life for most of our patrons.

Sorry, I'll get off my soap box now. It is the first day of our summer reading program and our library is busy with PEOPLE!

One who is smart enough to pose that question to this list, of course!

I am a new library student and I am fairly certain that I have chosen the right career path. However, I would like to know if I have what it takes for a successful career in librarianship. Will you tell me, in your opinion, what makes a great librarian?
