On a tangent to this, when I was a cataloger, I never tried to explain Dewey as a classification scheme.

I told people that it was an address. The top number is the block and the word (or letter code) underneath is the house number.  That made sense to them. If we went further, I could tell them all the dog books lived on the same block (636.7) and had different house numbers. (various authors).
