Thanks to all who replied! The Legacy of Heorot is the winner, it
seems. And the patron is very excited that we still have it on our
shelves.
Thanks!
Jennifer

This sounds like it might be "Legacy of Heorot" by Larry Niven, Steven
Barnes (Author), and Jerry Pournelle., Simon and Schuster (1987).
The following is from Publisher's Weekly:
Barnes has joined the co-authors of Footfall to produce an entertaining
if uncomplicated SF version of Beowulf with a Grendel courtesy of the
Alien movies. The colonists from Earth have spent a century in cold
sleep to make the first journey, one way, to settle a planet in another
solar system. Avalon seems perfect, a verdant, livable world still in
its prehistoric age. The biologists and engineers who busy themselves
planting and building scoff at the warnings of professional soldier
Cadmann Weylanduntil as a large, unnaturally fast and cunning predator
begins stalking the colony. Learning how to kill the beast is only the
first step, for they must then reevaluate their entire understanding of
Avalon's ecology. The novel is best in its sympathetic treatment of the
once formidable scientists who wake from cold sleep with impaired mental
powers. Paperback rights to Pocket Books.
I remember reading this, and although it was many years ago, I do
remember that the creatures were amphibibious and exhibited a juvenile
form much like fish and a mature form that could travel on land as a
vicious predator. The colonists lack of understanding of the alien
ecosystem is their downfall.

Hi Everyone,
I have a doozy of a book question. Patron remembers reading a science
fiction book in 1997 or around then. It was set in the future on
another planet or space station. He remembers highly evolved fish
(might be amphibians) that could come on land and run really fast. He
said the book was politically charged and seemed to be a veiled
commentary.
Anything come to mind? If not I will post it to Stumpers-L.
Thanks!
Jennifer
